20th Anniversary summer season playoff format EXPLAINED

Two game showdown determines if you play for championship or toilet bowl!

Okay boys here’s how the 20th anniversary summer season playoffs work.

Pay attention – especially you captains!

After the showdown robin the top two teams will play for the PHN Championship and the bottom two play for the Toilet Bowl on Monday, Aug 26th.

Mel Dawg designed this system for us, just like in the winter and it’s pretty solid.

Jessie locks down the post! Is he gonna put on a Braden Holtby performance for the playoffs?

The Seals have locked first place so they go into the playoffs holding 4 points.

The Nords have locked last place so they go into the playoffs holding 1 point.

2nd place gets 3 points

3rd place gets 2 points.

The Caps are Whalers are currently tied with the same record.

If that is still true after the last game Monday July 29 here are the tie breakers:

  • head to head
  • goals differential
  • lowest penalties

Whalers beat the Caps in 2 of 3 matches, so Whalers would take 2nd place if there’s still a tie after the last regular season game.

Monday August  12 Showdown Round 1

1st place Seals with 4 points vs 4the place Nords with 1 point at 8 PM.

Caps vs Whalers at 9 PM (with however their 5 points are split up).

AFTER this game we RE-RANK the teams to determine game 2 of the showdown.

It’s Joe vs Joe for a game one showdown! Which Joe will have the more go?!

Here’s how points are awarded in the round robin:

  • 6 points for a win
  • an additional 3 points if you get a shutout
  • 3 points for a tie
  • no points for a loss

If you win by 3 goals or more you get 3 points for the goal differential

If you win by 2 goals you get 2 points for that margin

If you win by 1 goal, you get 1 additional point.

One of these things is not like the others. Also uniform violation by yet another PHN Joe.

Examples of how this works:

A blow out win is only worth a set amount.   It doesn’t matter if you win by 3 goals or win by 7 goals – you only get 3 points max for the differential.

  • 4-2 win = 6 points for the win, + 2 points for the differential for 8 points overall (that gets added to your total going in from the season)
  • 2-1 win = 6 points for the win, + 1 point for the differential for 7 points overall
  • 5-0 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for shut out plus 3 points for the differential for 12 points overall
  • 2-0 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for shut out plus 2 points for the differential for 11 points overall
  • 7-1 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for the differential for 9 points overall

But a shut out can help you a lot – even if we had a zero-zero game – each team could get 6 points.

  • 0-0 tie = 3 points for each team for the tie + 3 points for each team shutout for 6 points to each team

Monday August  19 Showdown Round 2

With the new rankings from the first round of the playoffs we do it over

The NEW # 1 vs the NEW # 4 @ 8PM

The NEW # 2 vs the NEW # 3 @ 9PM

Yes it is possible this could be exactly the same match up as the first playoff game.

The Nords need wins to catch up and move on.

After this game the two teams who have the most points go to the FINALS and the 2 teams who have the least points go to the Toilet Bowl!

For years we’ve been trying to find the best possible format for playoffs that gives everyone a chance to win and makes the regular season count.  This is it!

In the Winter season every game was meaningful and we had a dramatic result in the finals that almost nobody except the entire Capitals team and management was bitter about!

Captain Marco is a great dinner guest because he always brings a a cup and a saucer! Can he do it for the playoffs?

Tie breakers

Given how this is set up genius of Mel Dawg’s system is that the odds of a tie coming out of the round robin showdown are extremely low.

However if there is a tie then the regular season standings determine the winner.

No overtime for the finals

If somehow there is a tie for overall points at the end of the finals or the end of the toilet bowl, the above rule applies.

The team that finished higher in the regular season is the champ in the finals, the team that finished lower in the regular season takes the Toilet Bowl.

Good luck to everyone but especially to Thomas.

Thomas is in serious danger of being written up by the fashion police for one of the most egregious uniform violations in PHN history!

Someone please get this guy some green socks. We’re professionals ffs!

Thomas, Harold Snepts wants his socks back!

He’s not as famous as Trevor Linden or Tiger Williams but still, he wants his socks back.

Ask your Dad – or watch this – Harold was a legend!

Let’s get Thomas some socks!

More to come on the spare rules, a refresher on penalties and the long awaited official car of the PHN and Amazing Race playoff survey next week!
