Playoff round robin format, tie breakers and schedule

3 game round robin determines if you play for championship or toilet bowl!

Okay boys here’s how the playoffs work.

There is no overtime for the round robin series. How the finals and toilet bowl will work are still TBD.

After the round robin the top two teams will play for the championship and the bottom two play for the Toilet Bowl on April 15th.

Mel Dawg designed this system for us, and it’s pretty solid.

Here is how points are awarded in the round robin:

  • 6 points for a win
  • an additional 3 points if you get a shutout
  • 3 points for a tie
  • no points for a loss

If you win by 3 goals or more you get 3 points for the goal differential

If you win by 2 goals you get 2 points for that margin

If you win by 1 goal, you get 1 additional point.

What? I didn’t knock that guy down. I have no idea how he got there. #playoffhockey

Examples of how this works:

A blow out win is only with so much. It doesn’t matter if you win by 3 goals or win by 7 goals – you only get 3 points max for the differential.

  • 4-2 win = 6 points for the win, + 2 points for the differential for 8 points overall
  • 2-1 win = 6 points for the win, + 1 point for the differential for 7 points overall
  • 5-0 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for shut out plus 3 points for the differential for 12 points overall
  • 2-0 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for shut out plus 2 points for the differential for 11 points overall
  • 7-1 win = 6 points for the win, + 3 points for the differential for 9 points overall

But a shut out can help you a lot – even if we had a zero-zero game – each team could get 6 points.

  • 0-0 tie = 3 points for each team for the tie + 3 points for each team shutout for 6 points to each team

Tie breakers

Given how this is set up genius of Mel Dawg’s system is that the odds of a tie coming out of the round robin are extremely low.

However if there is a tie then the regular season standings determine the winner.

For the record – despite a mistake in the last regular season article those standings are:

  1. Caps
  2. Whalers
  3. Seals
  4. Nords

Schedule

March 18th

9:00 Caps v Nords 10:00 Seals v Whalers

March 25th

9:00 Caps v Whalers 10:00 Seals v Nords

April 8th

9:00 Caps v Seals 10:00 Whalers v Nords

April 15

Toilet Bowl and Championship

Good luck!

As a league we continue to develop a competitive and challenging format. Proof of our progress is the current standings and a league where any team can expect to win. Well done to you all on this committee.

Today I write to you to present an exciting format to determine who wins the playoff format and compete for the championship. Please take a moment to review.

Please keep in mind that we do not have a league where you win or go home,

With 4 teams and four games as we have this playoff season the point totals below may be less important, however, we would like to test this structure for situations where we only have 3 games as a round robin to crown a champion.

As I have  some time on my hands, I have had lengthy discussions with friends who are the heads of Phys ed departments and others who have run tournaments and come up with this format. The focus of this structure is try as much as possible to have games that do not have any value.

Important areas that are addressed:

Plus – Minus. The discussion of goals for or against are automatically accounted in a game by game basis. The crap of running up a score is eliminated. And goals scored in a game by the losing team is also addressed as they restrict the winner to less points.

Ties can still be a death nail. However in the event that teams tie 0:0, there is a justifiable reward.

Shut outs become valuable as he shut out can be the biggest tie breaker. If 3 teams each have 2 victories but one team has a shut out they would come out ahead.

Total points to be calculated as examples below.
